Elevating Ambitions: Navigating Personal Growth Dialogues

There’s nothing more empowering and encouraging than crossing paths with someone who understands our ambitions. Our dreams are born from our unique experiences, and they can very easily set us apart from the crowd; however, there’s insurmountable joy to be found in connecting with like-minded individuals — especially when it pertains to our goals.

We’ve all been there. When we meet those people. The type of people who fill us with awe and inspiration. We want to ask them so many questions about themselves, their journeys, and where they’re headed. The excitement we feel fills our bodies, and we are ready to learn more about them.

Unfortunately, sometimes, despite our excitement and our awareness of how and why these people are exciting to come across, we may not know what to say.

In a city like New York, there are people from many walks of life and — typically — they are quite busy. They aren’t busy enough to justify an elevator pitch, but they are too busy to wade through awkward silence. So… what do we do?

What do you do when you want to strike up a conversation about your goals and aspirations with someone? Well, we’ve got the answer.

Ask, Ask, Ask

There’s nothing more tried and true than asking a question. Whenever we want to learn something new, the best course of action is to let our curiosity guide us. Ask them something you really want to know.

For example, let’s say you are at a workshop or an event, and you find yourself talking to someone who is in the same field as you. Maybe intuitively, you sense that this person has similar aspirations or — at the very least — shares the same level of ambition. We recommend you ask: where do you see yourself in 5 to 10 years?

Now, this might sound like a formal or even too basic of a question; however, it’s important to remember the setting you are in with this person. If it’s clear that this person is “going places” in their life, then it is safe to assume that they do have an idea of where they want to be within 5 to 10 years.

This can also help break the ice and give the conversation a solid foundation. Soon, the follow up questions become easier too. What made you want to go down this roadWhat inspired or inspires you most about this prospect (or goal)?

It can feel like an interview, but don’t underestimate how much people are willing to share. It’s easy to forget that we all have our raison d’etre. It is amazing to feel seen and understood by a stranger or an acquaintance who asks these relatively deep questions. It gives people the chance to tell you who they are and how they’ve come to be.

But, most importantly, the fact that you ask — indicating that you sense there’s more to this person than meets the eye — is incredibly validating. It not only builds a solid foundation for a conversation but for a meaningful and influential relationship as well.
