There’s nothing like a great compliment. It feels amazing to know that we are seen and appreciated. Compliments are a very common way to nurture relationships with others, but sometimes it can be very hard to come up with unique ones.
It’s easy to compliment a person’s shoes or outfit, but what about their personality traits? Would someone think those sorts of compliments are weird? Well, we’ve got the answers. There are various types of compliments to choose from, and many people would be pleasantly surprised to receive them.
Beginning with a relatable scenario, we’ve all met that person: the one who walks into a room and brightens it up. It’s not necessarily because of their looks but their charm. Maybe it’s the way they crack jokes, maybe it’s the way they listen and respond to your stories, or maybe it’s both! How would you compliment this person?
“I like your personality” doesn’t always feel like enough, but “You have positive and contagious energy” or “Your sense of humor always lifts my spirits” are great alternatives. Imagine receiving these compliments yourself! It’d make you feel so good and valued. It lets you know that you have a positive impact on those around you. This is a great way to let someone know they matter, and it can help foster a supportive relationship.
There are also effort compliments. Yes, you guessed it. They focus on recognizing a person’s efforts. A great example is: “Your dedication doesn’t go unnoticed.” It highlights the effort in a subtle and straightforward sentence. There isn’t any fluff! Just letting someone know that you see them and you respect what you see. This acknowledgment can brighten anyone’s day.
What if you’re having a bad day, and someone inspires you. You may not have the energy to give them a full smile and positive words; however, a little can go a long way and it’s important to remember that. “Your hard work is truly admirable” with no further explanation necessary is a great compliment. Don’t underestimate how important acknowledgement can be! It can signal to that person that you are a safe person for them to be around. Being supportive is the ultimate green flag.
Now, what about the people who support you? Have you been struggling to find the words to share your gratitude? How’s this: “I’m grateful for your unwavering support.” This is another direct compliment, and if you’d like another one that’s more colorful, try this: “Whenever I’m down, you’re there to lift me up. I will do my very best to do the same for you.” It’s important to remember to be nurturing. The grass is greener where you water it. When you continuously give credit where credit is due, you’d be surprised to hear how many unique compliments begin to find you.
The art of giving compliments isn’t about ulterior motives. We share our observations through praise because it is meaningful. The world can feel unsafe and dark. When we come across an experience or person that radiates the best aspects of life, it’s necessary to take a second and pause. Pause and be present, absorb what’s around you, and allow yourself to relish in it.
Compliments are not just a positive experience for those who receive them, but they are also a fundamental experience for those who give them. When we are the change we wish to see in the world, we begin to foster more hope for our collective future.
Whether you’re old enough to remember the days before the internet and the overexposure of the world’s injustices or not, many of us can agree that the world we wish to live in is safer than our current one. Many of us crave a life where we are actually excited to meet a stranger without automatically preparing for the worst.
