It doesn’t take a genius to understand the value of laughter. Laughing can create, heal, and nurture bonds with ourselves and other people. Laughing is good for our physical and mental health, and it is the best way to turn our day around.

Still, there’s an important need to remind ourselves to laugh every and any chance we get. As we get older and the world becomes more fragmented, more effort is needed to create fun and spontaneous memories with others.

Remember back in the day, when you were a kid and laughter came so much easier to you and your peers? Even if there had been a fight five minutes prior, you’d find yourself laughing at something soon after. Research has shown that we laugh most exuberantly between the ages of five and six. A statistic that could make us sad, or a statistic that can inspire us to bring that energy into our adulthoods.

Only roughly 10–15% of our laughter is due to jokes; in actuality, humans laugh the most when we are excited or happy or simply around other people. Humor is not limited to jokes or even relatable conversations.

When we look up humor in the dictionary, we do not find jokes but we find a state of mind. There is no better, healthier, or safer way to connect with others — humor wins each time. The reason for that is simple. When we are in a humorous state we are happy, we are positive, and we are open. Our guards are down and our anxieties are low. We allow ourselves the chance to relax our shoulders and forget the world for as long as we need.

Children are too young to even know or understand the state of the world they are born into. They may react to it — they are humans too — but they are able to flow through life without worrying about something going wrong. They’re too inexperienced to worry.

So, let’s emulate the children. Let’s go within and meet our inner child and laugh again.

William Arthur Ward said it best: “A well-developed sense of humor is the pole that adds balance to your steps as you walk the tightrope of life.”

Laughter gives us courage, hope, and ideas for a better future. It sounds cliché because it is true. When meeting new people, don’t ever hesitate to make them laugh. Whether it’s through telling them a funny story about your day or making a sarcastic remark about something within your surroundings. Finding pockets of joy to share with others is an essential part of life and very quickly leads to merriment and fun!

It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle culture, the stress, and responsibilities of life. Each day we learn a new lesson about how things could potentially go wrong, but that is not the only thing life offers us every day. It’s important to recognize that and take risks. Yes, laughing with a stranger can seem like a risk before you actually do it.

How many times have you stopped yourself from saying something humorous because you were nervous about how the other person would respond? Exactly.

Remember, we may all be different but we all need a good laugh. It reminds us that life isn’t always heavy. It can be light, joyous, and spontaneously reinvigorating. It inspires us to have more courage and to go toward the things that make us happier.
