It’s okay. You aren’t alone. We know how hard it can be to put your phone down — even if you’re talking to someone you really love; nevertheless, it’s important to learn how to keep your devices out of sight and out of mind.

But how? Luckily, as with many things, with practice and patience you can redirect your attention from your phone and become more present in your real life interactions.

It starts with remembering the reasons why you want to spend less time on your phone. Building better habits takes time and consistency. That’s why we need to keep our objectives in mind as we embark on any form of digital detox. Everyone has their reasons, and it’s vital to know your reason.

Today we’re going to explore how excessive digital usage can affect our health and relationships, and then we’ll help you jumpstart toward a better tomorrow!

Mental & Physical Health

Excessive phone usage has proven to increase risk of insomnia, depression, and emotional dysregulation.

Our phones emit a blue light that impacts our eyesight overtime. Our human eyes cannot filter blue light as well as it can other colors; therefore, more light passes through our retinas when exposed to blue light. Excessive phone usage can lead to insomnia due to the blue light suppressing our melatonin, a hormone that helps regulate our sleep cycle.

Many of us underestimate how vital sleep is to our health. When our bodies don’t get sufficient sleep it affects our mood and appetite, and increases stress. This leads to increased irritability and absent-mindedness. All of this contributes to feeling disconnected from our present moments.

Due to the addictive and highly stimulating nature of social media, games, and other apps on our phones, it’s easy to use our phones to “keep us awake”; unfortunately, this leads to the cycle of being on our phones way too much and experiencing an inability to stay present in our day-to-day life.

Good news, though: blue light can’t hurt you too badly; however, digital detoxes are important because they help us stabilize our physical and mental health.

Phones & Relationships

It is an unspoken truth that our phones can — quite literally — get in the way of our relationships. It can create miscommunication and problems as people can feel disrespected or uncared for when someone they are talking to isn’t present.

We keep our eyes glued to our phones for various reasons, but that doesn’t excuse how impolite it can be. When someone takes the time to sit and have a one-on-one conversation, that means something. It’s crucial not to take these little moments for granted.

Your phone will always be there, but the opportunity to build memories with people isn’t so permanent. Keep in mind that there is an entire world outside your phone. A world that’s filled with new people to meet, hobbies to get passionate about, and memories begging to be made.

Are you struggling to take that first step into the real world? Are you wanting to meet new people, but haven’t had the best luck?
